Bio
Andreas Karl creates music and music related texts. He is interested in interlingual phenomena, translation errors, mapping-processes, the culture of mistakes and ecological traumata. He closely works with the choreographer Hou Ying, the poet and stage director Liang Dandan or the textile and colour artist Christina Dörfler. Since 2010 he and his music are part of the social sculptures of hoelb/hoeb, addressing social taboos such as grief, illness, and care. In collaboration with the philosopher Katherina Kinzel, he wrote the libretto for Song Yang's chamber opera "The Envoy" about a space probe that is left behind in a shattering state of idleness after completing its tasks. For the composer Ying Wang he wrote the libretto for the opera "Lorry 39" and the monodrama "DELETE (sic!)". Both pieces are about the fatal consequences of misinformation, carelessness and isolation. He sometimes uses pen names and alter egos. He occasionally plays live sets using guitar, theremin, dulcimer and objects.
His academic research and teaching focuses on contemporary music and music theatre. Since 2022 he is a fellow at the International Research Center for Cultural Studies Vienna with a phd project on the recent aesthetic shifts in contemporary music in China. This grant also brought him to the Humboldt University in Berlin. He was teaching at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and now teaches at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
He was the assistant to the composer Beat Furrer, the director/conductor of the Neue Oper Wien Walter Kobéra and the arts manager Peter Oswald. He works as a freelance dramaturg for music theatre and contemporary music. For the record label KAIROS, he was a curator and producer. He co-organized the Arcana Festival for contemporary music 2010 and co-founded the vocal ensemble Cantando Admont. He is based in Vienna and Berlin.

Alter ego
Cornelius Berkowitz (2007-2022) is a former alter ego, prematurely decesased. His biography written by the author Christoph Strolz is on of the few remains of that identity.
